European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
