Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
